Her two-timing husband leaves Angela with a pile of bills and no hope, so she believes that her only choice is between pills and pulling the trigger on herself. A last-minute knock on the door sets the stage for a new plan, and what could have been a tragedy turns into an unconventional spin on romantic comedy in The Cat Lady Special (Book One of The Cat Lady Series) by D.C. Gomez. Thanks to her forward-thinking late father, Angela has more than a passing knowledge of firearms, and soon is the kingpin (queenpin?) of a ragtag arms-dealing crew consisting of her mother’s silver-haired elderly posse, teenage twin brothers, an energetic Zumba instructor, and a dubious gun supplier. Even her aloof cats get in on the action with their meows of approval.
The Cat Lady Special is an amiable twist on the chick-lit genre, and D.C. Gomez somehow manages to blend her knowledge of world-class deadly weapons, small-town Texas politics and gossip, and even southern cookery into a likable, fast-paced read. I found Angela to be relatable as a middle-aged divorcee who upends her reputation as a “sad cat lady” into one of savvy elegance, mixed with a wit sharper than claws. She reluctantly accepts the role of boss, but eventually inhabits it as if born to lead. The supporting cast of characters spans generations yet seems ageless in pulling off seemingly impossible tasks. If the remainder of the series follows suit, The Cat Lady will be sure to continue to charm readers.
