The cat ripped around the corner, scrambled onto the sofa, running over Justen, who spilled his Christmas nog drink. The creamy mess landed on Justen, the TV, couch, end table and the remote control while Shadow, the black, green-eyed young cat jumped from chair to chair. He raced up the drapes while Justen and his wife Sara searched for him. Shadow is their eight-year-old son Nathan's pet and they tell him Shadow is a mischief maker. Shadow then hurtles himself onto the Christmas tree, toppling it over. Justen is very angry and tells Nathan that if Shadow does one more thing, he will send the cat back to the SPCA. Will Shadow behave properly or ruin Christmas for Nathan and his parents?
The Cat in the Christmas Tree: A Magical Tail by Peter Scottsdale is an adorable story with the Christmas season as its backdrop. Magic begins when the magical Christmas tree takes Shadow out for a stroll that snowy night. The book is enchanting and whimsical and conveys some good messages to young readers through Mast, the magical Christmas tree who shows Shadow how to behave properly and treat others with kindness. The magical Christmas tree helps Shadow understand how to behave while living in a family and that meant not being bad to children and adults, saying nasty things that hurt the feelings of others, and damaging someone else's property. The descriptions are detailed and that makes the scenes tangible to young readers. The author captures the essence of the season beautifully and it is a perfect book to give as Christmas presents to children.
