The Caregiver's Journey: A Roadmap for Navigating Your Path, by Pamela S. Showalter and Raylene Bell, is a powerful and poignant guide to managing your caregiving role in the best way possible. The authors put forth their thoughts, feelings, experiences, and advice in a way that will help others traveling the same road. The book chronicles five years of caring for a loved one when there were 500 miles between them. The authors show that caregiving isn't always easy, and isn't always carried out in the traditional way, but can be as fulfilling as it is challenging. Their journaling created the content, which will inform and inspire you, and show you that you aren't alone.
This succinct and well-organized book can be a constant source of help to anyone entering the caregiver role, or who is in the midst of it and needs some advice on how to manage the cost, care, stress, and other factors associated with it. The chapters have takeaways that act as a review of the information. Tools for coping will be greatly appreciated by caregivers who feel lost or overwhelmed. One of my favorite parts is hearing about Margene Saxon Bell's life and history, and another is the points about patient advocacy during hospital stays because sometimes you don't know what to ask, and when you do, the information can be confusing, or too much to take in at one time. This is information that can benefit you today. Overall, this book has a good balance of beautiful writing and practical advice for caregivers. As a former hospice social worker, I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you are caregiving or know someone who is, The Caregiver's Journey by Pamela S. Showalter and Raylene Bell is the one book you want to keep within arm's reach.
