In the extraordinary novel The Cardiff Giant by Larry Lockridge, Jack Thrasher, a journalist for Discovery Channel, arrives in Cooperstown, New York, to investigate the disappearance of the Cardiff Giant. Following the discovery of the Cardiff Giant in 1869, its home had been a shallow grave at the Farmers Market in Cooperstown since 1948. But on 1 June 2003, the remains mysteriously vanished. As Jack questions the local people and outsiders, he realizes everyone has their own theory. From an alien abduction to a paranormal occurrence and robbery, Jack must make sense of all the legends, beliefs, and speculations to uncover the truth. The reporter finds himself engulfed in spiritual beliefs and lifestyles that take him deeper down the rabbit hole of confusion and absurd situations. Jack encounters many characters during his time in Cooperstown, who all believe they have the answers, but they will have to face the consequences of their beliefs. Whose theory will prove to be true? Will the notorious Cardiff Giant, with the five-inch smile, ever be found aimlessly wandering around Cooperstown?
The Cardiff Giant by Larry Lockridge is such a unique and original story. I loved how the author was able to combine legend, history, and spirituality in one storyline. The characters were superb, and their eccentric personality traits made them realistic. Sheila, the reformed strumpet, was my favorite character; her personality was so outlandish and wacky. I admired how the author covered serious and taboo subjects, giving them an ironic and hysterical twist. There were so many comical moments throughout this gripping story, such as the tango scene and every scene involving the Local Alien Focus Group. The author's ability to relay the diversity and eccentricities of human behavior and beliefs was exceptional. The plot is never dull as the unique characters try to prove their ideas are factual, regardless of the consequences or damage to their reputations. If you love slapstick humor and fantastic, colorful characters who find themselves in embarrassing situations of their own making, then I highly recommend The Cardiff Giant.
