The Bully Brigade: The Turn Over is a social issues novel for children, grades 4-6, written by Tamala Floyd. Petey, Diego, Ruthie, Pudge, Bustah, and Charlie are Misfit Elementary’s bully brigade. They have a thing about bullying and the misery bullies inflict upon their victims, and their methods for dealing with bullies are very effective indeed. The Bully Brigade ended up in a situation that required some even more intense planning, however, when someone started a food fight in the Misfit Elementary’s cafeteria. Soon tacos, tuna, and beverages were weaponized and flew from one side of the room to the other until Principal Strongarm entered the cafeteria. She was angry and wanted the instigator to step forward. No one did. The Bully Brigade has a feeling they know who it is, and they need a plan to expose the culprit, but can they? And do they even have the right person in mind?
Tamala Floyd’s The Bully Brigade: The Turn Over is a fast-paced and fun story about a public-spirited group of kids dedicated to making life bearable for the victims of bullying. It’s also a marvelous sports story that covers the Brigade’s basketball game challenge and their pregame training, as well as coverage of the actual game. Floyd’s characters are marvelous! I loved seeing how they worked together to forge a winning basketball team and dredged up the optimism and self-discipline to make it happen. I also appreciated how Floyd’s story addresses bullies and bullying and the effects it has on the victims. The author’s plot is compelling and unpredictable, and her characters are finely honed and authentic. I enjoyed reading this story and would love to see more offerings by this author. The Bully Brigade: The Turn Over is most highly recommended.
