The Broken-Hearted Many by AB Plum is a psychological thriller with strong characters, a book that explores the anatomy of evil from a unique perspective. Annasophia and her children are still affected by Michael Romanov’s gruesome murder, which remains unsolved. Moving to a new house with her three children is an opportunity for the family to make a new start. While the younger of her children shows great courage and quickly adjusts to their new life, things are different for Alexandra, her eldest daughter, who does not seem to be able to move on. While Annasophia suspects her daughter’s rebellious behavior could be linked to her father, things quickly escalate out of hand when she discovers that Alexandra is involved with a stranger. When Annasophia enlists the help of ex-cop Satish Patel to deal with the stranger, she isn’t quite sure what to expect. A reckless decision will lead to murders. Can it be the past is catching up with this family?
AB Plum writes beautifully and employs a style that allows the reader to follow the different points of view of the characters. The story is told in an engrossing first person narrative voice, alternating between the different characters. This makes the narrative a little more intimate and focused. The characters are strong and well developed and readers will enjoy the psychological implications of the story. There is a sense of suspense developed around the characters who are not what they seem to be, and the reader becomes anxious to find out what happens to them. The Broken-Hearted Many is a tale of a family caught up in a nasty tragedy, a story of crime and the impassioned quest for redemption. Readers will be keen to find out if this family can stick together after all. It is emotionally engaging, psychologically rich, and delightful to read.
