The Box Of Souls: Family Relics Book 1 is an urban fantasy written by Tanya Miranda. A witch lies dying and in her coven it is customary for her powers to be passed on to her eldest daughter. The witch, Agatha, however, had only one son, so she determines that her magical powers will die with her. The magic has its own plans though, as her two unsuspecting granddaughters are soon to find out. Jasmyn is an eighteen-year-old brat who has long since lost normal contact with her parents, and her sister is a frail, overprotected eight-year-old, doted on by incredibly ineffectual parents.
In the sad days that follow their grandmother’s death, and in the confusion surrounding the distribution of her occult books and effects, a petulant act by Jasmyn releases three huge and very dangerous dragons who, assisted by their minions, proceed to run amok in California, causing massive death and destruction. The dragons had been imprisoned in times past by Agatha and now seek the daughter to whom her powers have been transferred, so that they can retain their freedom by killing that very individual. As the dragons rage through the countryside, the whole family is in grave danger. Alerted by Agatha’s death, two members of her ancient coven arrive to render what assistance they can, but the sisters must work their individual magic in order to try to rid the world of the dragon menace.
At first I could not imagine sympathising with the witch Agatha’s granddaughter, Jasmyn, but as the story develops it becomes obvious that her brattish behaviour is merely a defence mechanism and her inept parents are largely to blame. Her brother, Logan, compounds the situation with his attempts at patching things up and, in the final analysis, one can’t help but side with the beleaguered girl. The story is engaging though, and there is some astounding action when the army and air force try to bring down the virtually invulnerable dragons. It obviously needs to be continued so that more can be learned about the witches’ origins and the nature of their power, but it is an intriguing start to what is sure to become a successful series.
