The Book of Jacob by Jacob Grovey is a beautiful collection of poetry that mimics the different seasons of the soul, the human temperament, the joys and thrills of life, the pain buried in our humanity, and a lot more. The poetry is simple, written in free verse, and the tone is light and conversational. The ebullient style is captivating and the reader immediately gets pulled in by the author’s intelligent use of imagery to convey powerful emotions and insights on life, love, loss, and personal growth. This collection comprises beautiful reflections on life, encounters, reminiscences of the author’s experiences and a lot more.
Jacob Grovey has a great gift for symbolism and rhythm and readers will be moved by some of the lines that powerfully reflect the human condition. One of the poems that I found very inspiring was “Free Bird,” which captures the reality and the sentiment of most people, evoking the sense of comfort and security we tend to feel when we refuse to venture beyond our comfort zone to explore other possibilities. The poet writes: “The nest had become comfortable / So comfortable, in fact, I almost felt…bored / I had everything I needed.” He captures one of the obstacles to growth in this beautiful imagery. The author articulates on a variety of themes, including faith and love, humanity and suffering, personal growth, the pursuit of happiness, the search for meaning, and a lot more. The Book of Jacob is poetry that is imbued with a high spirit of humanity; it features a very accessible diction and delightful lines. I enjoyed the insights and the sheer beauty of the rhythm, free as a bird.
