Why would anyone want to read? When there’s computer games, television, high tech this and that, what could possibly be the allure of reading? Deziri loves to read (as do I). Why? Well, why not, is what I would ask. Reading takes you to worlds you couldn’t possibly imagine visiting; reading takes you on a journey through time and space and, best of all, through the imagination. The love of reading draws one into the love of books and, like Deziri, the love of the library. The school librarian knows Deziri well. Her name is Miss Paper – clever, apropos, and a little humorous choice of name, wouldn’t you agree? She has a clever name for Deziri: “Hello again, my bibliophile!” Do you know what a bibliophile is?

Rachelle Jones Smith’s picture book story, The Book Girl, is a clever way to introduce young readers to the joys of reading. The plot follows one little girl, Deziri, who loves reading and reads all the time. Most of the language is simple to help a young reader read the story themselves, but there are a few complicated words introduced, like bibliophile and paleontologists, that will encourage young readers to expand their vocabulary. The plot leads the reader through Deziri’s passion for reading until she is presented with a challenge. Deziri is baffled one day when Miss Paper says, “You know, there is such a thing as too much reading.” After studying her stack of books, Deziri ponders Miss Paper’s comment, “How could there ever be too much reading?” That’s when she started observing her fellow students and what fun they were having when they weren’t reading. She could do both, couldn’t she? Have fun with the other children in the playground and read? Why not? A beautiful story about books and the power of the imagination. A great read, a treasure, as are so many books.
