The Blue Butterfly by Dixy Gandhi is the story of AJ as she tries to figure herself out while everyone else is stuck in the rat race. While her whole class was scrambling and hoping to get a job, AJ was on her reboot. Every year, AJ went away to get in touch with herself. Her friend Meera was tired of covering for her in front of the students and the professors. AJ was a different person, but that changed when her mother died, and her father brought a new person into her life. AJ found Ryan when she needed someone the most. For Ryan, AJ was his life and his family. She was everything Ryan needed in his life to feel fulfilled. Together, the couple will come to terms with the world around them and what they truly mean to each other.
The Blue Butterfly is a coming-of-age story disguised as a romance and a narrative on human behavior. Some people are built differently; they need to lose something to fully appreciate what they had. Something like this happened with our protagonist. The author’s comparison of Ryan and AJ with the moon and sun was beautiful and so very accurate. The reboot was an important part of life for AJ; she needed that alone time away from the hustle of real life to rejuvenate herself. I loved Ryan, his patience, and his determination to show AJ how important she was to him. The dialogues were fun, I liked Meera, and I liked how she treated AJ with gentle care. The twists and turns of the story were unpredictable, and the narrative was paced just right.
