The sweeping historical saga The Blood of the Clan, the newest work by author Steve Justice, takes us on a journey to the past. In North Britannia, (or early Scotland) the Pict clans have to rally together to protect themselves, their families, their homeland, and their very way of life from the invading Romans. Characters and relationships are beautifully described, and I truly felt involved in the story as I went through it. So many works of historical fiction falter in their ability to get into the heads of characters from the time period in a realistic way, but this book is an exception to that. Daigh, our young story telling protagonist, begins our journey with him frustrated by all the infighting amongst the Highland clans. But when the invaders from Rome march upon them, and the clans unite to try to stop this seemingly insurmountable foe, Daigh finds himself with an almost impossible choice to make for himself; deny his true love, Seonid, or betray his family and his clan.
The Blood of the Clan was an engaging read, one that truly leaves an imprint on the mind. I would recommend that you pick it up when you have quite a bit of time to read uninterrupted, as you’ll have a hard time putting this book down. Readers of fiction and history alike would enjoy this novel. Author Steve Justice’s skilful prose seemed true to the time period, but wasn’t so burdensome as to prevent me from getting into the story. I know that this is Mr. Justice’s second book; I hope that there are more to come.
