The Black Guard by C.R. Daems is an entertaining science fiction read. I would describe the genre as science fiction meets military drama meets action/adventure all rolled into one. The story follows a girl named Rivka, who was given over to the military by her father when she was only six years old. She’s then raised and trained by the military and eventually ends up in the elite Black Guard unit. In this rigorous section of the military, Rivka finally begins to find her purpose and meaning for her life. She is not without flaws, though, because of her unusual and harsh upbringing. During one of her early missions, Rivka discovers that the Black Guard may not be what it seems and this revelation has the power to change everything!
I thought The Black Guard was an interesting book. The format reads as a series of military missions but fits with the overall plot and tone of the book, in my opinion. The author does a superb job in keeping the action going and the story moving forward. I also thought Rivka was a good protagonist; she was stubborn, fierce and very flawed but also likeable. I think that her flaws made her seem more realistic. The author does a good job setting up her past to show and prove why she turned out the way she did. I think fans of military drama, action, adventure and science fiction genres will find a lot to like in The Black Guard by C.R. Daems.
