The second book of the Black Dragons Chronicles by M.R. Lucas follows the two noble elf houses of Je Luneefa and Nui Vent as these houses, bound by blood magic as well as centuries of battle, laughter, love, loss, friendship, and loyalty, fight and strive to maintain the safety and prosperity of their families and close friends. Threatened by politics, assassination attempts, jealously, and hatred toward their family members, it seems at times like a never-ending war for their peace. All manner of fantasy creatures are in the fray as dwarves, elves, humans, and, especially, the legendary black dragon, Ona Kei Kuri Ryuu, continue to safeguard the houses of Je Luneefa and Nui Vent. A great adventure of sword, sorcery, fantasy, and unrequited love awaits!
M.R. Lucas’s slow build-up in this book fully invested me in the world and characters of Canae. My senses were captivated attempting to imagine the Dwarf King’s mountain fortress, Keiku’s magically guarded dragon lair, and the beautiful city of Torondell. I was taken aback by how well every member of the Je Luneefa and Nui Vent houses was written and given fully-fledged personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and emphasizing the power family, loyalty, and love hold. Battles are intense with the use of magic, blood enchanted weapons, and powerful beasts like Ona Kei Kuri Ryuu, all the while unfolding to an end that plucked heavily on my heartstrings. M.R. Lucas’s second book of the Black Dragons Chronicles is a wonderful addition to the fantasy genre.
