The Big Bad Wolf’s Birthday is written and illustrated by Andrew Abel for his grandchildren, Madison, Melia, Luke, and Rocky. This tale is a sequel to the famous English folktale, The Three Little Pigs. As the author says, you’ll enjoy his story more if you already know about how the Big Bad Wolf tried to blow down the three little pigs’ houses. The wolf’s defeat in that story makes the friendship between the wolf and the pigs in this story all the sweeter. As the story opens, the three little pigs are throwing a birthday party for the Big Bad Wolf, with presents that will remind readers of their earlier battle. The wolf no longer eats pigs. He has become a vegan, which means that he doesn’t eat animals or products that animals make like milk, cheese, eggs, or honey. But it’s fine if the pigs bake him a cake. That’s something they do out of friendship. For those who are wondering, yes, you can bake a delicious cake without eggs, milk, or honey.
The Big Bad Wolf’s Birthday by Andrew Abel is partly a rhyming tribute to the ways former enemies can become friends and partly a humorous retelling of a favorite tale. The pigs have become multicultural. They have a piñata, bagpipes, pizza, and a baseball game at the wolf’s party. The pigs put the wolf’s huffing and puffing, which scared them in the first tale, to good use in this one. The wolf huffs and puffs while he blows up balloons. The pictures are simple enough that children might want to draw additional illustrations for this endearing story of unexpected friendship. This tale provides hope for children that current bad situations, like bullies or brats, can become the beginning of a happy situation.
