The Beast of Seabourne by Rhys A. Jones is a fast moving fantasy story set in Britain. It is the second in the Artefact Quintet, which follows three school children as they attempt to solve a centuries-old mystery. The children, Oz, Ruff, and Ellie, are trying to figure out a puzzle that began on Halloween night in the first book, surrounding Oz's brilliantly creepy old house, some very unusual artefacts, and technology the likes of which our world has never seen.
I was at a bit of a loss when I started reading The Beast of Seabourne. Rhys A. Jones is an absolutely incredible author, no doubt about it. His sentences are beautiful, his characters are full of depth and occasional surprises, and the mystery itself is fantastic. However, not having read the first book in the series threw me off a bit. I was able to stay with the story, but I am pretty sure I'd have enjoyed the story a great deal more had I read the first one. That being a shortcoming on my end, however, did not detract from the book being worth five stars. I'd love to delve into the mystery a bit here, but given that this is the second book of a series, I don't want to give away spoilers going either forward or back. Suffice it to say that this book is well worth the read, and I'll be checking out the others!
