The Atlantis Papyrus: Not All Secrets Are Worth Revealing by Jay Penner is a historical novel with a complex plot built on a powerful and long-standing tradition. Alexander the Great has died and the entire kingdom is plunged into uncertainty. The problem is he’s left no heir. Captain Deon has more than one thing to worry about. The fate of his family is on the line and if he can’t settle his debt, his family will be sold into slavery, and that is the last thing any man, especially one of his standing, expects. But hope comes when the cunning Royal Secretary offers him a very delicate mission — to steal a papyrus from the funeral procession, one with a powerful secret about the throne. This definitely is better than being sold into slavery, Deon thinks. But the secrets contained in the papyrus will set him on a quest against the most influential men in the kingdom and he finds himself fighting not only for his and his family’s well-being but for the lives of many innocent souls.
Jay Penner captured my attention from the very opening of this gripping tale, presenting a premise that is compelling and that defines the complexity of the plot. The author reinvents an ancient period and makes readers feel as though they are there, painting images that are vivid and beautiful, and exploring a world where men can be utterly ruthless and unforgiving, especially when the scramble for power is concerned. The narrative has twists that are unpredictable, and “aha” moments that will thrill readers. The Atlantis Papyrus: Not All Secrets Are Worth Revealing is one of those books that would be great on screen — a vivid cultural setting, a land where slavery is still practiced and where a vast nation is ruled by a well-defined tradition; a phenomenal conflict symbolized by the empty throne. It is fast paced, beautifully crafted, and magnetic.
