The Art of Breaking Up is a young adult romance novel by Elizabeth Stevens that is perfect for teen readers who enjoy fast-paced tales with relatable characters. Norah, Wade, and Lisa might have been friends years ago, but that all changed two years ago when Wade broke Lisa's heart. Out of loyalty to her best friend, Norah despises Wade for what he did to Lisa, who can't seem to get past her feelings for her ex. In an unexpected moment of weakness, Norah is accidentally civil to Wade, and that's all it takes for her to realize that he might not be so bad after all. Norah soon finds herself torn between maintaining her loyalty to Lisa and pursuing a friendship – or perhaps something more – with Wade.

Without hesitation, Elizabeth Stevens dives right into the heart of The Art of Breaking Up. There is no slow build-up to set the stage and develop tension; we are thrown right into it from the beginning. The fast pace of The Art of Breaking Up is established immediately and doesn't stop until the last page, making it nearly impossible to put down. I love that the pages are filled with lots of dialogue and text messages, which make it feel personable; it is easy to become immersed in Norah's mind. With her heart and her head pulled in different directions (and her decisions sometimes questionable), Norah seems like a real person facing real-life problems. I look forward to reading more from this author.
