When Winnie discovers her boyfriend's cheating ways, she decides to leave him and start anew. But how and why she doesn't know and she doesn't want to know. This time she is happy to let the uncertainty embrace her and bring her to new adventures. She meets a few strangers on the road; some turn into friends and a few she's glad to just be acquaintances that she'll soon forget. Chuck delivers her to the place where she needs to be. Alex gives her a place to stay after being a stray for quite some time. And finally, Eleanor brings her home. Spencer Margaret's The Anchor House is a wonderful story of healing and finding yourself. This book is also a good reminder that family is not defined by the blood we carry but by whoever is there to accept us for who we are and is there for us anytime and anywhere.
This literary fiction tale takes its time to unfold, but all the time spent reading is worth it. It is brimming with lessons to live by to the point that there are times when the quotes seem too much. Aside from the battles that Winnie and her friends have fought and overcome, the book's relevance can be further seen in its feminism and LGBTQ-friendliness. Eleanor's character is, literally and metaphorically, a light unto this world. She is kind, respectful of everyone's beliefs, and is never imposing. Spencer Margaret's The Anchor House is highly recommended to readers who wish to bring out the best in everyone and to those who are pushing to be better. Trigger warnings include paranormal scenes, homophobia, mental health problems, substance abuse, power tripping, and pregnancy.
