The Adventures of Zeke: Animal Shelter by Kelly Robertson, with illustrations by John Konecny, is the first adventure Kelly has with her dog, Zeke. Kelly only agreed to tag along as her friend searched for a dog to adopt from the animal shelter. Suddenly there's Zeke. With his big eyes and playful personality, he immediately captures her heart. Follow Kelly's first adventure with Zeke as she brings him home for the first time.
The Adventures of Zeke: Animal Shelter is a sweet story with detailed and stunning illustrations. Kelly Robertson tugs at readers' hearts as she perfectly captures the love and bonding she feels the moment she first meets Zeke. The book is aimed at small children, and is the perfect family read for a bed time story. There's an idealistic feeling to the story, but it's also realistic and shows Zeke behaving exactly as a playful dog would. As Kelly experiences the excitement and anxiousness of waiting to bring Zeke home, she daydreams about what her life will be like, from Zeke sleeping on the bed to going for a swim.
It's a sweet daydream and comes across as perfect, then when she gets him there's the reality of him chewing up her stuff. But Robertson hows that this is the ideal relationship. Even though Zeke completely chews up her “five pairs of shoes and three pairs of sunglasses,” the connection she has with Zeke is worth it. Children will be pulled into this story because it's honest and explores the friendship between a person and a pet. A lovely story that can't be missed!
