The Adventures of Prince Domar: Discovering the Power of Positivity, by Melissa Botello, is an adorable, inspiring children's book about working hard and believing in yourself. It centers on Domar, a little boy who is seven years old and in the second grade. There is a math test at school that he really wants to pass, but he learns that in order to make a good grade, he has to work at it and have faith in himself. A positive outlook is also at play. The boy is surprised by his test results and is eager to show his friends what he has learned about being positive and pushing himself a little.
Botello has crafted the perfect little book to motivate young students by reaching inside themselves and realizing that they have the power to change outcomes and make situations better, just by being positive and trying hard. The descriptions of the characters are lively, and the images are well suited for the text. My favorite part is when Prince Domar's parents tell him he has special powers called PP (Positive Powers), and he is astonished by the concept--so astonished that he just has to try it out with his math test, which is in two days. There are other good lessons here for children to learn--the value of listening to and believing their parents, setting goals, and sharing the good news.
There is a discussion of terms at the end for readers to reflect on--terms like "goal" and "positive thinking", and activities for readers to engage in if they want to, like actually setting a real-world goal, and a goalsetting worksheet. The author has packed a lot of punch into this little package of positivity, and adults can learn a lot from it too. If you're looking for a great book to help encourage young students or inspire children to believe in themselves, The Adventures of Prince Domar: Discovering the Power of Positivity, by Melissa Botello, is a perfect choice.
