Jim Zervanos bares his soul and his harrowing cancer diagnosis in That Time I Got Cancer: A Love Story. Jim’s cancer diagnosis didn’t happen the usual way. One day out of the blue he had the fright of his life when, looking in the mirror, he saw his face turn purple. The trip to the emergency room couldn’t identify the actual problem, and that seemed an ominous start to Jim’s struggle with his health. It took many, many tests, surgery, and spectacular doctors for them to ascertain that Jim had lymphoma. At least now with a diagnosis, they could treat it, as Jim’s doctors enthusiastically pointed out. Jim gives us a rare insight into the mind and soul of someone battling cancer. We see how it affects him, his friends, his family, and most importantly his wife and son. Jim’s story is a touching and brave memoir and is truly a love story of life.
As soon as I read the title Jim Zervanos had chosen for his memoir, I knew I was going to love it. That Time I Got Cancer is crammed with wisdom and positive insights written with wit and candor. As the person who battled cancer, Jim shares the love and appreciation he has for the people who helped him along the way as well as the toll it took on his marriage. Jim’s story was inspirational and therapeutic. If I could give the book ten stars, I wouldn’t hesitate. That Time I Got Cancer is truly a powerful book.
