I’ve always enjoyed a good mystery. I think it’s a genre where some of the most creative work is possible, where an author’s mind can be twisted and turned in all sorts of interesting directions, and has the capability of going down all sorts of avenues, sometimes humorous and sometimes dark. But I have to be honest, I’ve been feeling a bit burned out on mysteries lately. It’s almost like all authors are following a cookie-cutter template, with the same basic characters, plots and endings. So it was with some trepidation that I picked up That Old Black Magic: Book Two in the Lizzie Hart Mystery Series by author Caroline Fardig. This book was simply a delightful read. Funny, inventive and interesting from the first page, I could not put it down from the start.
Follow our intrepid protagonist, Lizzie Hart, as she gets involved in yet another unsolved murder, this time a highly personal one. Her ex-boyfriend’s brother has been killed, and Lizzie is devastated. Devastated and determined to help solve the case. All the while, she’s working on her own almost-relationship with the hunky Blake Morgan, and realizing that she better keep careful watch, or she might become the killer’s next victim. That Old Black Magic was truly a magical read. It hooked me from the beginning, was laugh out loud funny throughout, and had me guessing until nearly the end, which is unusual for this frequent mystery reader. Any reader who loves mysteries, suspense, humor, or just a great read would be delighted with author Caroline Fardig’s book, and I am pleased to highly recommend it. This was the first book that I’ve read in this series, and I was certainly easily able to catch on to the backstory. I am very much looking forward to going back and reading the first installment just for my own enjoyment. Ms. Fardig, I hope you are hard at work on more books in this series, because I, for one, will certainly be lined up to read them!
