Spooky, suspenseful, and satisfying. Ten Dark Tales of Mystery & Suspense by Craig Enger is a well-crafted homage to literature’s most famous authors who penned the best and most popular mysteries, suspense stories, and science fiction. Enger starts the reader off with a poem called Under Whitest Moon. It sets the pace for the rest of the book and evokes the nostalgic theme of late-night anthology television shows like The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt, without constraining readers' imaginations and giving readers a sense of what is to come in the ten short stories. Each of the short stories varies from three different categories, the first being Twists and Turns… and Murder, the second Mysterious Encounters, and the third Fantastic Realms.
The Jewel Thief is the first story of the bunch. It offers us our first taste of Ten Dark Tales and allows us to have what we first expect, but truly it is only the tip of the iceberg. The further you read, the more Enger kindles your curiosity and imagination. Ten Dark Tales of Mystery & Suspense is a book you pick up and have a hard time putting down, despite what might be lurking on the very next page. The tone of Enger’s short stories is both immensely bone-chilling and hopelessly romantic. Ten Dark Tales of Mystery & Suspense will consume you and betray you at the very last sentence, leaving you hungry for more. All there is left to say is, “...see upon black seas, the black ships sails. Enter the realm of Ten Dark Tales.”
