Tempting Fate: A Barrett's Bay Romance (Broken Fate Book 1) by Emily Stormbrook is an alternative contemporary romance novel that features the main protagonist, Miranda. Born the second out of two children, she wasn’t wanted. After her sister Dana, the golden child, died from a drug overdose, the hatred from her parents tripled. She was married off against her wishes at sixteen to a horrible man. For eleven years, she experienced hell as abuse, house imprisonment, and forced drug dependency were her lot. She made her escape to Barrett’s Bay, where she reunited with her childhood crush, Jesse Fateson. The world thought she was dead owing to an accident, but will her husband find her? Will Miranda and Jesse have a chance at love? Will she ever be free from her demons?
Tempting Fate by Emily Stormbrook is an interesting, thought-provoking, and heart-wrenching book. It has a strong plot and an enthralling storyline that kept me glued until the end. My heart broke for Miranda because I could not imagine her trauma. When the ones who are supposed to love and protect make it a mission to feed their own to the sharks, it leaves a bitter taste on the tongue. Deception, distrust, hate, grief, acceptance, sacrifice, love, and courage were some themes explored in this novel. I loved the characters, especially fake deaf Dotty and Doc. Mrs. Fateson was a handful, and her antics made me laugh. This is a beautiful but very sensitive book. It may be a trigger for anyone who’s been through either parental or spousal abuse. I’d love to read more from Emily Stormbrook.
