Telling: A Guide to Finding Healing by Telling your Abuse Story by Dawn Damon is a very personal, honest look at childhood abuse. There could be many ways this topic is considered and looked at, from those who have had the same happen, to those who have not. Dawn looks at the many areas and facets of childhood abuse and breaks them down into a very understandable, detailed way of possibly understanding a mostly not talked about subject. She is direct in her explaining and also very straightforward when sharing her own experiences. She takes the reader through a detailed set of steps to become free from the heartache and pain.
Telling by Dawn Damon is a resource I wish I could have come across almost a decade ago. I totally understood everything she wrote about in this book, and also agree with most everything she stated as thought processes, lack of self-confidence and the ultimate way out. Dawn gives a very detailed path to follow, and the writing of the path does not seem challenging in the least. It is written in a way that can be understood, even for those lost in the repression of abuse. I was very impressed to see the quotes. They added a bit extra to the book at the right place and time. I also appreciated seeing the review questions at the end of each chapter.
This topic cannot be taken lightly, nor can it just be passed by. If one is to step into forgiveness and let go of past events, Dawn definitely provides questions to make the reader think about their own personal journey. I would have liked to have seen a few more scripture references in the beginning of the book; however, the author did add quite a few towards the end. I was also very appreciative of the prayers included. I know that going through this very process myself, I sometimes did not even know what to say or how. The prayers included would have been a very nice help in time of need. Finally, the sharing of her own personal experience at the end was a huge encouragement and edification. Overall, this is a very good, personal book.
