Fans of psychological thrillers that border on horror will have goosebumps as they feel the confusion and fear that Lauren Adams experiences once she realizes that the handsome Max with whom she has fallen in love is a sadist bent on revenge and that he has purposely selected her as the tool to exact that revenge. How can that be? Is there a reason Max has selected her and not just any woman? Why does her beloved Max, now cleared of murder, forbid her from entering the basement of their house? What is he building down there? Torn between her love and attraction to Max and her increasing puzzlement about his volatile moods, Lauren is one frightened female.

If you're looking for a quick, engaging story that leaves you relieved that what you've just read is fiction and not reality, you'll enjoy Tell Me Why by Ruth O’Neill. Questions and chills abound as the tension builds toward a climactic finish with a most unexpected twist. Lauren's inquisitiveness about that basement nearly kills her but even when the story is finally done, readers come away just a bit uneasy: is monster Max really done with her? Tell Me Why may not be as sophisticated as some thrillers but its rawness works. It's a good blend of narration and dialogue and moves at a suitable pace. The description of the basement tunneling rather challenges the imagination, but that just makes the overall mood even eerier. Don't be surprised if you read this novel in one sitting.
