When you open Chris Foster’s poetry collection, Tango In A Teacup, you are presented with a variety of poetry forms, some one-liners and a few others taking up more than one page. The structure of the poem itself is one of being dropped into the center of each page. You digest many emotions, ranging from lows to highs, a healthy combination of both that brings this eclectic collection to life. There are a few poems that rhyme, but most of them are not the kind of rhyme that is blatantly in your face. The poems are reminiscent of a classical rhythmic sound that transcends the words on the paper or on the screen.
In Chris Foster's collection, you feel the poems come from a place deep in his heart, that perhaps he had to pry open some doors that had been "boarded up." One feels like they are part of this secret place inside the author/poet's head. They are relatable and sometimes specific, which gives the feeling of his authority, though some poems are in the realm of fantasy. Rosencrantz was a favorite. I read it several times, and it triggered different emotions with every read. If it's fiction or reality, I’ll never know, but that is part of the mystery of poetry; one sometimes never knows when a poem is fiction or truth. There were a few rhyming poems toward the end that felt a bit too soaked in rhyme for my taste, compared to the rest. Otherwise, an outstanding collection of poetry that will charmingly bend your brain and mist your eyes.
