Tallahatchie by Rick DeStefanis is the first book in a Southern fiction series. “Jack knew he was a fool” is the way the protagonist is described in the opening lines of the story and his uncle had warned him that he was doing something foolish. The love of his life has just left him, thinking he has had an affair with another woman, and to help her move on, he leaves everything behind and moves to Mississippi Delta where he takes on a job as a factory manager. Rash decisions have consequences and can Jack Hartman face the consequences of his own choices?
Tallahatchie is a well-crafted story with a great storyline and a wonderful setting. I enjoyed the great cast of solid characters and it is interesting to see how the author explores the psychological workings of the mind of the protagonist. I was literally transported into a new world and into the heart of the protagonist. The characters are very real, and they are expertly designed to fit into a setting and a culture that reflects the spirit and values of the South.
The writing will seduce readers and keep them reading, laughing at the numerous humorous moments in the story and feeling the heartache of the characters at times. It is very rare for an author to write about ordinary characters and do so in a way that is satisfactory to readers, but Rick DeStefanis has successfully crafted a story that showcases social values, explores the joys and perils of the common factory worker, with powerful themes like friendship, love, family, racism, and the dignity of work. This story is as entertaining as it is inspiring.
