Tabitha Fink and the Patchwork Pirates by Rick Felty revolves around Tabitha Fink, the cat with one eye who likes to try out things that other cats do not. Tabitha Fink is a pirate and her ship takes them on journeys where they have a lot of fun together. Bartholomew, Tabitha’s first mate, watches for things which they should steer clear of. He is the brave one and keeps them all safe on the blue seas. Though people think all pirates are mean, they stink, and are not very clean, Tabitha says they are friendly and kind and start the day with a warm shower. Right now they are planning a journey across the wide ocean, to an island where there is hidden treasure. They need more helping hands to make that journey. Will the newly hired crew match up to Tabitha Fink’s expectations? Will they finally be able to find the treasure?
The story is filled with adventure and conveys good messages to young readers. It is about acceptance, and understanding that different people have different skills and, put together, they can work well. The author weaves messages into the plot with expertise, making it easy for children to understand the importance of accepting and working with diverse people. The illustrations are colorful and lively, and they help young readers identify with the characters and the scenes easily. All books with messages, concepts, and morals should be introduced to children as there is no better way to help them understand, and this book does just that.
