In Swindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler, the fifth offering in the Karina Cardinal series, Karina finds her lazy Saturday morning routine interrupted when the FBI comes knocking on her door and proceeds to ransack her living quarters in search of her ex-boyfriend, FBI agent Michael Finnegan. It seems he is suspected of embezzling a large amount of money and he has disappeared. Even though she and Mike split up months ago, Karina cannot believe her boy scout ex would be capable of doing such a thing. Something is amiss and, as usual, her detective instincts take over to help Mike and find out as much about the FBI’s case as possible. Karina uses her skills to find clues as to why Michael is being hunted by his agency. When he contacts her for help, Karina goes to her friends at Silverthorne. Is Michael Finnegan being set up for a crime he did not commit, and why?
Swindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler is a cozy mystery with an edge. I do not often read cozy mysteries, but I really enjoyed this one. Fans of the Karina Cardinal series are treated to a first-rate mystery and a romantic tease between Karina and Rick Donovan at Silverthorne, while her feelings for Michael, now a fugitive, come into play once again. Her knack for getting into trouble also leads to new clues. Fans of the series will remember her clever banter with characters from the previous books as well as newer entrants. The dialogue between the characters and the outcome of the mystery makes Swindler's Revenge by Ellen Butler a satisfying addition to the series.
