Author Biography

Cat Michaels, M.S., Ed.
CAT started writing stories in fourth grade and hasn’t stopped since.

Her books for young and reluctant readers have been recognized for excellence in children’s literature: Silver - Readers’ Favorite * Finalist - Wind Dancer Films * First Place - Purple Dragonfly Awards * Gold:-Literary Classics Children's Book Awards.

She has degrees in special education, decades of teaching experience with kids from kindergarten to college, and has managed communication and training programs in the private sector.

“Sweet T and the Turtle Team” is based on Cat’s many vacations to her beloved North Carolina shore. She was inspired (and saddened) when finding a baby sea turtle flattened by cars in a lot blocks from the sea and wondered how the hatchling had gotten lost so far inland. She decided to pen a tale to raise awareness of the fragile animals and help children understand how they could help protect the environment. Cat also weaves her special education background into this story through its theme of understanding children who struggle to read.

Cat lives in North Carolina with her family, where she enjoys digital photography, creates Southern pocket gardens, works out most days, and writes.

Sweet T and the Turtle Team: Book 3 of the Sweet T Tales by Cat Michaels is a charming story that revolves around Tara, or Sweet T as she is called by her family, and the adventure and mystery that surround her during her time at Gull Island. Tara is feeling lonely sitting on her Great-Aunt Mae’s porch and she misses her older sister, Kristen, who stayed behind with their father. Her younger sister, Jenna, and her mother, and Jenna’s stuffed rabbit, Fuzzy, are there with her. She finds the children on the North Carolina island polite but different from her pals at home. Mama knows life is different on the island. Her Great-Aunt Mae lives a hop and a skip away from the beach. The girls' mother is involved in a special project with the Gull Island Aquarium and that is the reason why they are all there.

The story has mystery, excitement, wildlife, adventure, turtles, pelicans, family, and friendship. The topic of conservation of turtles and their nests has been knitted in very well, helping readers understand more about turtles, their nests, eggs, and hatching. Texts from Kristen are educational and informative and make the story attractive, and the manner in which these are shared with readers is unique. All the characters - Billy, Tara, Jenna, Great-Aunt Mae, and Mama - are fun and well sketched, making them memorable to readers. The watercolor illustrations are bright and summery and they make the story, scenes, and characters vivid. It is a good story for read aloud sessions in classrooms because of its contents and the social causes it deals with. The story has layers to it and not only addresses ocean conservation, environmental issues, and wildlife, but also overcoming dyslexia and bullying. The author does an excellent job weaving in social issues and life lessons through this story.

The teacher in me loved the back add ins: comprehension questions, discussion questions, and information on turtles hatching. I loved the bully aspect and how there was an up-stander in the book. This book is excellent for many discussions.

The book’s treasures don’t end when the charming and educational story is finished. Ms. Michaels' added discussion questions for the readers to answer to ensure they understood and retained the story. She also added a glossary of abbreviations used when texting, a glossary of story related terms and a photo gallery of a real sea turtle nest and hatchlings. I love and highly recommend this story.

Untamed Doodler

The author teaches in a creative manner about the natural world and its hazards that her intended audience will find appealing. Intermittent chapters of text conversation to and from T’s older sister, back home, make a clever and relevant addition. Bonus photos, videos, mind ticklers and so much more are included after the story, for further enrichment. Soft watercolor illustrations add a nostalgic charm to the tale.

Sweet T and the Turtle Team is an absolutely adorable book about lots of things that young readers will love: turtles, island life, wildlife and how we can help, friendship, family, and being there for each other. Author Cat Michaels very cleverly weaves both wildlife information and doing the right thing into the story without bogging the young reader down with too many details, or coming across as preachy. I have to mention the stunning illustrations! The images of the wildlife in particular (not forgetting Fuzzy, who has a couple of pics of his own) just make the story come to life and help draw young readers into the chain of events, as well as clarifying wildlife details.

James Milson

Children's author Cat Michaels has created a delightful summer adventure and tale for pre- and early readers with "Sweet T and the Turtle Team" on Gull Island. The story is interwoven with wonderful lessons of ocean conservation, respect, kindness, friendships, and family bonding. Addressing serious topics such as dyslexia, name-calling, and threatening storms, the story is lightened by the inclusion of a treasured toy bunny with a tendency to get lost, and Aunt Mae's wonderful front porch treats. After-story activities and photo gallery serve to enrich the learning experience. The book is wonderfully illustrated, with very clever text messages between chapters to both summarize main points and to move the story along to the next chapter. A fun read, very well done, and highly recommended.

The way Cat deals with the subject of dyslexia in her book deftly makes use of her unique background with a master’s degree in special education and two decades of experience working with students with learning disabilities. As a fellow author, I admired her writing skills that added a whimsical sense of magic and mystery to an important story that children will surely cherish.

Hopeful Serenity

This book charmed me from the opening page. Although I did not grow up near the beach, it instantly transported me back in time to my own childhood and the summers I enjoyed. As I read, I easily fell into the story and found myself sitting on Aunt Mae's porch drinking lemonade, helping to search for Fuzzy, and becoming part of the Turtle Team.

I love how the author, Cat Michaels, subtly included facts on turtles throughout the story cleverly hidden in text messages. In the back she also incorporates additional learning materials, photos, and questions to make children think about how their actions might impact others. Oh, and don't get me started on her sound effects that had me giggling.

It is without hesitation that I recommend this book for your child's library...or your own!

Sweet T and the Turtle Team is filled with adventures of life on the North Carolina beach during the summer. Cat Michaels does a good job of showing how real children would react to problems with the turtle nests and also has the characters show compassion for the boy with dyslexia. It will be fun to discover Tara and Jenna's next adventure.

Lovely tale that will inspire children to watch out for the sea turtle nests along the shore. A story of friendship, family and nature. Enjoyed the text messages from older sis included in the story. Lots of cute pics in the back of the book of real sea turtles and other beach wildlife. Great tool for teaching kids!!

T. Doody

Very sweet story which would be easy to read for children. The author discusses the tribulations of ordinary children, but she also portrays issues kids experience in a way that all young people can relate to, and the plot offers good solutions for their problems. It is a very good teaching tool!

Author Cat Michaels writes this sweet story in such a way that readers will feel right there, smelling the sea water, and of course, the love and guidance of Aunt Mae. The bonus material in the back of the book will extend fun and learning.
