In his book, Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Baseball, Dan Keller has researched and complied everything that a person needs to know when coaching youth baseball. Filled with diagrams, charts, illustrations, drills and tips, this book is a valuable resource. Keller begins with identifying the positions and discussing the field, really explaining the basics and "must-knows." He then moves onto managing the team, having meetings, leading practices with drills and also discusses various things that will be worked on with the players; for example, proper position while batting and techniques while catching. Keller has included drills that can be used and step by step instructions as well.
I see this book as being a valuable resource that will be used over and over again. It is very straight-forward, and yet, it also included every piece of information that would be necessary for a coach. I love how it is organized, making the book very user-friendly and not intimidating at all. There are diagrams, lists, illustrations and step-by-step instructions, making this appeal to and work for people of various learning styles. The tips that are included, for example in regards to pitching, are handy, as each child will be at varying abilities and time frames for mastering the basics; therefore, the tips offer additional information. There is not an aspect of the sport or managing a young team that is overlooked in this book! Keller truly "covers all of the bases" and has everything that a person needs to know and more in this one book.
