The diverse situations Snowman Paul finds himself in allow young readers to empathize with him and want to help him. Of course, he is still the adorable snowman we love so much. Even though life is complicated for him in the summertime, he is calm and kind, while wondering how to be with Dan even in summer. They both want to have fun all year round. Dan, who is a lovely boy (his best friend), has a great idea to keep his favorite snowman happy and comfortable despite the heat.

I have read some of the Snowman Paul series books, such as Snowman Paul at the Winter Olympics for instance, and this new opus is as fabulously positive and entertaining as the first picture books. The stories continue to help children deal with a variety of issues. In this case, Snowman Paul feels he does not fit in because it is summer. We can all understand why. And this is something many children also feel when they move away, change schools, find new friends, go on holidays, and so on. Reading this story with kids is a great and fun way to make them understand that everything is fine, that they should be patient, and learn to get to know their new surroundings, circumstances, and discover new friends. Everything is possible as long as you do not give up or give in to shame, despair, or fear. Another must-read!

Summertime with Snowman Paul by Yossi Lapid tackles a real dilemma if a child’s vivid imagination is taken into account. After all, how can a snowman enjoy hot weather? He’d melt! The true message is much more subtle. “Fitting in” is important to children and increasingly so when they start attending a playgroup or school. If a snowman can do it, so can they. Narrated by a little boy called Dan, Snowman Paul, complete with the traditional carrot for a nose, comes alive. He can cope with autumn (fall), and spring, and winter is his favorite time of all, but how can he handle summer? He is too hot, even with his head shielded by an open newspaper that has headlines forecasting hotter weather to come.

Yossi Lapid has created a winner in Summertime with Snowman Paul. He has very cleverly created a picture book that tells the story in rhyme, which has worldwide appeal to children. Everywhere English is spoken, or taught as a second language, parents, carers, playgroup leaders and kindergarten teachers will welcome it. It is the perfect length – not so short it’s over almost before story time begins and not too long for most youngsters' attention span. The language used is suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 3. Younger children would happily look at the colorful, well-drawn, detailed illustrations while the story is read to them. I recommend Summertime with Snowman Paul by Yossi Lapid without reservation; it is a wonderful book to be treasured long after the days of picture books are over.

You see, Paul is a snowman, a very jolly, happy-go-lucky fellow, but a snowman nonetheless. What do you think would happen to Paul in the hot days of summer? You’re right, he does sweat a lot. He tries swimming at the local community pool, “but people thought I was a fool!” He tries lounging at the beach, but sunbathing just isn’t his thing. He tries the zoo, but he’s laughed at by an ape. He shares his problem with Dan and they come up with a great idea, one that will keep Paul cool and comfortable during the hottest days of summer.

Told in rhyming verse with simple language, the plot develops around Paul’s growing dilemma as the days get hotter during one of the hottest summers ever. The colorful and cheerful illustrations certainly help move the story along. The building of friendship and the collaboration of ideas between friends make this both an educational and engaging read. Young readers will be chuckling along at some of Paul’s antics, but the funniest part of the story is Dan’s solution to Paul’s problem. An underlying theme is one of fitting in: Paul just wants to fit in and be a part of the crowd, but his special needs (and, you have to admit, being a snowman during the hottest days of summer, Paul does have some special needs), make him the butt of jokes and lots of teasing. It’s just no fun being a snowman in the middle of the summer. An entertaining and inclusive story.
