Suit to Saddle: Cycling to Self-Discovery on the Southern Tier by Larry Walsh is the story of riding a bicycle across the southern half of the United States, from California to Florida. The ride took place at a rough time in Walsh’s life when he’d lost his job. He’d had the dream of riding across the country for years and decided to fulfill it by riding with 10 others in a non-supported (they carried their own gear) trip. Along the way, he faced great adversity, but also met some wonderful people and learned much about himself. Suit to Saddle reports not only on the riding itself but on Walsh’s interactions with his companions and others. It also describes much of the beautiful scenery Walsh saw along the way.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Larry Walsh’s book Suit to Saddle: Cycling to Self-Discovery on the Southern Tier. What I enjoyed most was Walsh’s relating of encounters with those he met along the way, both his fellow cyclists and people he met at various stops. He writes in great detail, adding to the authenticity of the reader's experience. Walsh wisely broke his book into short sections, each one headlined with the date, starting point and destination, and distance traveled. That compartmentalization of his trip makes Suit to Saddle a book one can pick up for just a few minutes if need be. It would be excellent as a nightstand book. This book should inspire anyone who’s going through a tough time or a massive change, and anyone who wants to be challenged to embark on an ambitious venture. I highly recommend it.
