When we first moved to the home we have now lived in for over a decade, we were blessed with a garden full of hydrangeas. I’d never grown hydrangeas before and it’s been a long journey of discovery as I learned how to best care for these beautiful plants. I have had some successes and some failures. I wish I’d had a concise guide to help me care for these popular flowering garden shrubs. Now I do with Success with Hydrangeas by Lorraine Ballato.
Lorraine Ballato’s Success with Hydrangeas: A Gardener’s Guide is the complete, comprehensive version of everything you want and need to know to grow and care for hydrangeas. It has valuable tips and answers to multiple questions and provides knowledgeable and exciting tidbits to help novice and seasoned gardeners care for their hydrangeas. It is well organized, much like the format of an encyclopedia, following one critical step after another in a logical progression, from identifying the hydrangea to various stages in its care. For example, the pruning section was particularly informative, as I was never sure if I was doing the right thing when I pruned each fall after the flowers were done and the leaves had dropped. However, I guess I wasn’t too far off, as my hydrangea has survived and thrived, and this helpful guide supported my methods. There’s also interesting information on propagating and transplanting, things I’d never considered doing, but knowing it can be done successfully and with care is helpful. Overall, this was an enjoyable and informative read, something I’ll refer to frequently as I continue to care for my hydrangeas.
