For fans of well-crafted paranormal tales, Stuttering Back: Fast Forward by Daudi Anyumba is a gorgeous treat. The stutterer, Dave, the man fondly called “Stut” by friends, suddenly discovers that his curse could be a blessing after a traumatic incident. He has a passion for running as well and he does so often with Tim, his friend. Dave’s trauma provokes a new experience for him. His speech disorder, coupled with his passion for running, allows him to travel through time. With this new ability, Dave starts to experiment with his running partner and researcher, Tim, going back into the past to change some of the unfortunate situations in order to alter the present. But by changing events could he be influencing the bigger plan? What if he is part of a powerful scheme of things? It’s for the reader to find out what purpose he has to serve with his gift and whether he has what it takes to harness and use this gift or not.
I enjoyed this story, a breezy read with interesting characters. I liked the fact that the protagonist is someone with a disorder and readers will follow as he tries to cope with his speech disorder. When the story starts, he is just an ordinary kid riding a newly bought scooter, but soon he discovers that he is more than his physical impediment. The characters are well-developed and the setting within which the story takes place is vividly captured in the moving prose. Stuttering Back: Fast Forward is a quick read, an engaging story told in a clear, powerful voice. You’ll finish reading this story before remembering you ever started. Very enjoyable.
