Stumbling Toward Happiness by Kat Lehmann is a collection of poetry that illustrates the struggles of growing up and the bittersweetness of life itself. The poetry is separated into several parts, each of which carries a specific theme. From Sweeping the Corners, which illustrates the beauty of perseverance and treasuring oneself, to the final chapter of Tripping Ourselves Open, which showcases the grandeur of the world, each poem describes specific emotional instances in a simplistic picture that describes both humanity and its environment. What’s more, each poem has a description just before it, helping to put the poem into context. Lehmann captivates readers with these poems, all of which contain lessons that they will treasure for a long time.
One of my favorite poems in this collection is Housekeeping. Before the poem begins, Lehmann describes what it feels like to clean up all the mess, to get rid of the sentimentality that might be holding you back, however painful it may be. Another poem that I loved was Contagion. I liked how the author spun the word in a way that was positive, especially during these trying times when the world does just need a bit more kindness. I also enjoyed the positive tone that the collection offers. It provides a sort of comfort and depicts the stresses of life as a wonderful mess that we need to navigate in order to grow. As such, I would recommend Stumbling Toward Happiness by Kat Lehmann to those who enjoy inspirational fiction, literary fiction, and poetry.
