Stress Release For Dogs: The Canine Emotional Detox by Diane Garrod is a deeply intensive guide for individuals and organizations who find themselves in a situation where their dog is exhibiting aggressive behavior. Broken down over the course of over a dozen chapters and half a dozen appendices and resources, Garrod provides insight on what Canine Emotional Detox—or CED—actually is and how best to implement it. The CED program is carried out over a meticulously planned 72-hour period, compartmentalizing intensive relaxation, positive mental stimulation, and physical stimulation through specialized activity. When executed properly, harmful stress toxins are neutralized for the best chance of genuine bonding to bring your canine into the fold of its loving human family.
Stress Release For Dogs is an absolute blessing for those of us who have fostered, adopted, or rescued pups, only to discover later that the toll stress has had on the new family addition creates a divide between the canine and the new parents. For us, food aggression and resource hoarding strained the relationship and put us into a position where we were seriously considering the possibility that this was an animal we could not have in a home with small children. The possessive aggression was terrifying to all of us. With the assistance of our vet, we were able to modify aggressive behavior but had Diane Garrod's book fallen into my lap two years ago, I believe we could have managed stress-release sooner, and likely without the use of medication. I like that Garrod takes different behavioral patterns into consideration. I had no clue that dogs can and need to reach a state of REM for deep relaxation and what to look for in a sleeping pup to affirm it has been reached. There's a really great program in this book, and I have no doubt it will be appreciatively received by all who read it.
