“Straw,” a book of poems written by Carol Moscrip, deals with a wide array of subjects and yet each poem is well-imagined and well-written. There are thirty-one poems that make up this collection and they are divided into three sections. The poems address serious issues and uses the kind of language which is so descriptive and vivid that the scene is brought to life for the reader. The poems vary in terms of length and the style in which they are written. Some of the poems focus on hardships that women face in other countries, such as in China, along with the struggles and expectations that lead to needing counseling and medication in order to get through day after day. Other poems tell stories of one’s life and adventures.
This is not a light book of poetry to just sit down with and thumb through in order to pass some time. Instead this is a book of poems that will be thought-provoking and each poem will be read and then read again in order to decipher the meaning and we shall really think about what the author is saying through the poem and the images that are being painted through the words. I find each poem to be beautifully composed with strong messages about various issues and topics that have led me to think about life in general and about specific situations people find themselves in. This is an excellent book of poems if you are looking for poems with meaning and ones that will leave you thinking about them long after you finish reading.
