Strands of Guilt: A Murder Mystery by Devadeep Gupta takes place in the fictional country of Theisolh. Someone is killing musicians. There’s a pattern to these crimes, and the killer leaves behind puzzling and intriguing clues in his wake. The elite, mysterious investigative arm of the government, the Corteux, is engaged to help solve the crime and stop the killer. All the while, political intrigue and a possible plot against the government simmer in the background. Vincent, the primary protagonist in the story, finds himself not only in the middle of the investigation but also in the crosshairs of suspicion. Where will it all end? Will Vincent be able to stop the killer? What secrets about the ruling class of Theisolh will be revealed along the way?
Devadeep Gupta’s Strands of Guilt is much more that the murder mystery the title implies. It’s a complex psychological thriller with a stage set by the actions of a serial killer. Yes, there’s a murder mystery at the outset of the story, but most of that mystery is solved by the midpoint of the book. However, that’s just the beginning of a fascinating tale. The first half of the book, while engaging and interesting, is merely the climb at the beginning of the rollercoaster ride ahead. The murders are just the tip of a fascinating iceberg of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. I found myself surprised on more than one occasion as Gupta tossed more and more revelations into my path, keeping me engaged and daring me to put the book down. The pace accelerates until you finally reach the story’s denouement, which presents more surprises that lure you toward reading the sequel. This is a well-written story that will hold your interest from the very first page to the last.
