In "Storm: The Elemental Series", author Brigid Kemmerer makes her debut appearance in the young adult market. Most readers will be mesmerized by the hypothesis that four brothers represent the Earth's elements: fire, wind, rain and earth. As the beginning is a bit sluggish, it may take some readers some time to get into the concept. But once we understand the concept of people controlling elements correlated to the Earth, the book begins to take on a mind of its own. When Becca Chandler decides to intervene in a teenage fight, she unwittingly places herself squarely in the middle of two warring powers, each bent on having their way with the elements. At some point in the story, Becca seems to understand that by continuing her contact with the Merrick brothers, she has placed herself in harm's way. Despite her insight, she continues to plod along, seemingly unable to extricate herself from the intrigue of the brothers' mysterious powers.
The book is marked by nonstop action, with romance as a competing theme among the triad of Chris Merrick, Becca Chandler and the New Guy in town, an unorthodox teen who wins the trust and respect of Becca. The machinations of the love triangle will keep the hearts of the teenage readers beating, and they will look earnestly for resolution. At times, the action seems to occur at the expense of the teens actually talking out the problems and trying to find a resolution to their multiple issues. I found the attempted rape scene somewhat glossed over but that may have been due to the strong character of Becca. As a whole, the book will draw the teenage market and will leave most readers wanting to read the next in the series.
