The novel "Steps to Heaven" by Wendy Cartmell is definitely a thriller. It is actually a roller-coaster ride story that elevates your blood pressure as Wendy packs so many intriguing details into one story. A father and his young son are found dead. It is a tragic discovery, which baffles Sgt. Major Crane and other investigators. What would prompt a father to kill his own son in such a manner, and then take his own life? Were there family or financial issues that contributed to the decision to leave this world and take steps to heaven or something more sinister? Despite family pressures of his own, Crane painstakingly pursues his investigation, uncovering the real instigator. Is this the only case? No! Bit by bit, "Steps to Heaven" uncovers a character whose ploy is drawing people to believe this great deception and fail to grasp how deeply they are being misled.
"Steps to Heaven" is morbid reading in parts, with graphic details on the death which I personally found unpleasant. That is not to say they are not relevant to the story, because they are. The background for this story is Aldershot military base in England and the intricacies of the military methods of crime solving and police methods are forced to come together in order to solve the horror that unfolds. Lots of action with unexpected turns. Some offensive language is there but overall it is very well-written.
