Squirrel Superhighway is an illustrated children’s book, written by Anna C. Morrison and illustrated by Vanda Lavar. Duke is an adventurous dog who loves to watch the squirrels all day. As he watches them run their errands and play in the trees, Duke imagines what it would be like to be up in the trees with them. He realizes that some are collecting acorns, so Duke gathers some of the acorns which the squirrels have dropped, placing them at the base of the tree as a gift. Excited, yet becoming quite exhausted at the same time, the reactions of the squirrels are not quite what Duke had anticipated.
Duke and I share a common love and adoration of squirrels, but Anna C. Morrison has crafted quite an imaginative and well-written tale of a dog who would love to become a squirrel. While Duke is of a completely different species, it is easy to relate to him while reading his well-intentioned actions, his sadness and his excitement. I was not only surprised by this delightful children’s story, but was completely enchanted as the behavioral aspects of the squirrels were quite accurate in the writing. Although here in Finland, squirrels hoard nuts instead of acorns, one thing is for certain – watching these beautiful, tiny creatures is definitely something which can erase your worries and bring a smile to your face. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the adventure and excitement of Squirrel Superhighway, but I wholeheartedly recommend it to young readers aged 5-12, so they can fully understand how two different species relate, as well as discover the behavioral differences between two animals with a love for the outdoors.
