Spy Holly and the Case of the Missing Cookies is an adorable mystery for beginning readers. Holly is an inquisitive little girl who enjoys puzzles and feels she would make a great spy. She overhears about a mysterious disappearance at her school and thinks she can help. The teachers are worried about the cookies that vanished at the school. Does Holly have the skills of a spy to find the cookies and the thief? Working on a puzzle is one thing; can she find the clues to this puzzling problem? Author Colleen Baxter Sullivan has written an interesting story for kids that their parents, librarians, and teachers would enjoy having them read.
I found Spy Holly and the Case of the Missing Cookies a simple, yet colorful book perfectly suited for children who are just learning to sound out words. Colleen Baxter Sullivan has an extensive selection of books published by Waldorf Publishing for level 1 readers, which makes a great collection for reading groups, schools, and at home. The sentences are short with simple vocabulary words. This book is easy to comprehend for young school-age children. They will feel excited that they not only read through the book themselves but also experienced the adventure with Holly. This book emphasizes Holly’s desire to be a help to those around her by using skills she has developed. The author points out Holly stayed with a trusted adult when she stayed after school. I believe the silly ending would delight children as they recall similar events happening in their own homes.
