Evie is a young witch who goes to a school for regular children. Along with her normal best friend Izzy, she has a cat friend named Nip, a bat named Sylvie, and a magical corncob named Pops. In Spooky Magic, the second installment of the Evie Everyday Witch series, Evie finds out from her friend that a new witch is starting school with them tomorrow. She’s not too happy, mainly because she is the newest classmate and the only witch to attend Wyndemere Elementary. When Evie finds out this new girl is the daughter of a famous magician, she gets even more nervous. She doesn’t want this new witch to go to her school because, according to her, witches are nasty, self-centered and extremely competitive. Not to mention that Evie doesn’t want Izzy or her classmates to meet another witch, even though her school doesn’t know that she is, in fact, a witch. What Evie doesn’t expect is that this new witch is someone she knew and disliked. Veronica went to Pergoria, a magical school located where Evie used to live. The two girls disliked each other with a passion. Veronica, in particular, disliked Evie ever since she put a potion on Veronica's head that made her go bald instead of growing her hair out.

I think Elena Paige did an excellent job of writing a fun, spunky, fantasy book for older children. I haven’t read the first book in the series, but if it’s anything like Spooky Magic, it will definitely have my attention. The characters are well written and thought out. I like Evie’s character because she’s not a perfect witch and displays human, childlike qualities that the young reader can relate to. The story plot was fascinating and it hints at what may have gone on in the first book so the reader isn’t completely lost as to how Evie ended up living in a normal town and going to a school with regular children. It’s a book series I would recommend reading, especially for those young readers who are into fantasy and Harry Potter novels.

Spooky Magic (Evie Everyday Witch #2) by Elena Paige is about a grade school-aged girl, Evie, who is also a witch! She is the newest student at her school, Wyndemere Elementary, and she has some non-human friends such as a talking cat named Mr. Nipkins, aka Nip, Sylvie, a bat, and a corncob called Pop that can walk and make popcorn, too. Along with some fun spells and other neat things, Evie has a flying couch because non-witches are not allowed to fly on broomsticks. So, Evie’s best friend, Izzy, can travel with Evie. In fact, as a non-witch, Izzy knows more about witches and magic than Evie. Then one day everyone is talking about a new student at school, and Evie is instantly jealous. Who is this new girl and why is she such a threat to Evie?

Spooky Magic (Evie Everyday Witch #2) by Elena Paige is the second book in the series. But, readers can also enjoy the book as a stand-alone. Elena Paige’s writing captures the everyday conversations of her young characters well because these conversations sound so genuine that we can hear these characters’ voices. Reading it out loud only adds to this effect. Other characters are introduced, here and there, and add to the fun. There is nothing sinister or overly scary on these pages, except for some spookiness of the Halloween kind. This is an entertaining, fast-moving story with not only some imaginative magical adventures and illustrations but also some very real concerns for this age group, and a message that conflict can be resolved amicably. Young readers will enjoy this book enough to want to read the first one and future ones as well.
