It has been over a decade since Teegan Boyne walked into the 6th Precinct with no memory of his past other than a tatty identification slip and a body covered in Arabic calligraphy. His search for answers to his origins has led him down several dead ends, but his luck is about to turn. He and his partner get the odious task of tracking down a killer with an incredible talent for covering their tracks. Juanita may look like an innocent woman to everyone on the streets, but her kill count tells a different story. Beneath that sleek veneer lies something dark and deadly, watching and waiting for the right time to strike. Teegan may not know it, but he has become integral to a titanic battle between good and evil in Chicago Thomas's Spit.
The pace is surprisingly sedate for a novel with a lot of action. Chicago Thomas employs a rather ingenious combination of poetry wrapped in impressive detail, subtly drawing readers in so that one can feel the fear crawling on the skin of Juanita's victims just before she delivers her brand of justice. The dialogue is straightforward for readers to easily follow. At the same time, the origin stories of the critical characters are beautifully crafted and spun out to keep readers hooked on each line of this one-of-a-kind narrative. The high point of Spit is how it seamlessly transitions from physical activity complete with weapons we are familiar with to a supernatural thriller on the scale of an Armageddon-type saga and back, sometimes within a single subplot. Spit is nothing like the conventional crime novel; action genre enthusiasts will enjoy this unique offering from a talented writer.
