SPIKE: What Are You Great At? by Rene Carayol is a non-fiction self-development book. SPIKE details a radical way of focusing on and finding one’s “SPIKE,” and thus enabling a happier and more successful personal and professional life. SPIKE, as a concept which is introduced in this book, means—Strengths Positively Identified Kick-start Excellence. The book assumes correctly that everyone has at least one solid strength and, in this sense, no single one is worth more or less than the others. The key is to examine both so-called strengths and weaknesses, and to identify that core “SPIKE,” or what one is naturally great at and enjoys. This does not mean focusing on the most obvious strength of a person because often, although a person may be good at doing something, it does not necessarily follow that he likes doing it. Thus, the book is divided into several chapters that focus on the “dos” and “don’ts” of navigating life, using your “SPIKE” and utilizing it to the fullest.
Although I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up the book, and the fact that the subject is not that obvious from the title, SPIKE: What Are You Great At? came as a complete surprise when I started reading it. I thought the idea of graciously accepting one’s strengths and skills as well as weaknesses, without humbling anyone in the process, is quite a radical one. Often in society, people are classified as winners or losers, which is not only unfair, but untrue and unjust. This book makes a great case for this and in addition provides a lot of useful information and tips for personal and professional growth. The writing is genuine and clear-cut and I would certainly recommend this book to everyone.
