The most appealing aspect of the stories featured in Spectrum of Love by Akash Chaudhary is that they are all eminently possible – every scenario depicted in this hopeful and emotionally charged collection is, without a doubt, something that could happen and probably does happen every day in the real world. The hopes, dreams, fears, confusions, and self-doubts of the characters depicted in these twelve modern tales are true-to-life and relatable to a very high degree; in addition, Spectrum of Love offers a thought-provoking question at the end of each story, along with an opportunity for readers to share their perspective on the central problem described in each tale. This interactive feature is a most refreshing addition to the collection – it would not be surprising for readers to re-read these stories many times as their lives progress. The central characters are all young males in the early stages of independent decision-making, which makes them highly relatable to young adult readers or older readers seeking halcyon nostalgia.

The endings are tidy in this collection and the way of love runs a great deal more smoothly than it tends to do in real life, but these stories have been written to engender a world of hope, after all, and are meant to inspire and to teach, so it would be mean-spirited to judge them harshly on account of their sunny and optimistic outlook. As vehicles to uplift and inspire, these twelve charming stories serve their purpose admirably. Spectrum of Love would be particularly inspiring for male adolescents struggling to come to terms with same-gender orientation, bisexuality, and/or longing for acceptance. Some of the stories depict sexual encounters, but never in explicit terms or by using inappropriate language. On the whole, Spectrum of Love by Akash Chaudhary is an appealing, benevolently educational, encouraging, and valuable resource for readers seeking a better understanding of gay relationships in a society too often plagued by a lack of acceptance.
