Special District: Harbin Book 2: The Tigers of East Mountain by Tim Stickel is a historical mystery. The body of a local Jewish businessman is found in a back alley in Harbin, China. Borya was on probation to become an inspector in the Harbin Judicial Police. Together with a Japanese police intern, Borya was assigned to investigate the murder. The Japanese were in control of the District of Harbin, and the suspects included the anti-Japanese resistance and Soviet spies. The closer he got to the truth, the more Borya was in danger of becoming the murderer's next victim. There were leaks in the department and deadly assaults, and Borya was unsure of who he could trust. Borya and his Japanese intern were engaged in a race with the killer that took them to the Manchurian border.
The Tigers of East Mountain by Tim Stickel is complex and exciting. The story is set in Manchuria, China, in 1932. Stickel created a complex political world in this novel, and I was compelled to become part of it. It was a fascinating read, and I was intrigued from the start. The plot was well-planned and executed with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, not knowing what would happen next. The story was fast-paced and action-packed. The characters were authentic and relatable. My favorite was Borya. He is an excellent and honest detective and had the respect of his colleagues. The story was well-researched and powerful. It exceeded my expectations by far.
