Sonnelles is a collection of forty-eight poems based on the original English sonnet form, written by author Robert Sterling. In its audiobook format, these modern adaptations of the form are read with pacing and emotion by the author himself and accompanied by backing tracks composed by the author too. The commentary and general theme take us through the journey of life, meditative and contemplative in nature but also possessing an air of hope through reminiscence. Ideas about self-contemplation, hope, despair and, most of all, love are discussed through clever, rhythmic wordplay and soft rhyme schemes which sometimes deviate from the traditional form.
The content of Robert Sterling’s work combines a thoughtful selection of words and imagery with clever pacing and permitted moments of reflection. Each sonnet featured in Sonnelles has its own individual moment of consideration for a person, element or feeling, but the overall theme of reflecting on life’s experiences rings true, making for a coherent and powerful collection of verses as a whole. The production quality of the audiobook volume of Sonnelles serves to enhance the poetic form by giving it its proper pacing, rhythm, and intonation as intended by author Robert Sterling. As a narrator, Sterling has a pleasing and calming voice which allows the clarity of the verses to wash over readers in a meditative state. The music fitted the themes of Sonnelles really well and added to the tone of nostalgia and reflection.
